半夏的干燥块茎为类球形，有的稍偏斜，横径1~1.5cm，高0.5~1cm。表面白色或浅黄色，上端多圆平，中心有凹陷的茎痕，呈黄棕色，周围密布凹点状须根痕(习称麻点)，下面钝圆而光滑，质坚实致密。纵切面如肾脏形，洁白，粉性充足。粉末嗅之呛鼻，味辛辣，嚼之粘牙，麻舌刺喉。以个大、皮净、色白、质坚、粉性足者为佳。
冒充半夏的水半夏，不用全草，只用块茎，而且经过炮制解毒。80年代多加工成片状，使之很难与清半夏片鉴别。现在造假者胆子更大了，直接用块茎出售。
